| Summary: In patients with suspected thyroid disease doctor usually arrives at two kinds of diagnosis, etiological or anatomical and functional. Anatomical or ethological diagnosis reveals the cause or nature of disorder as well as the related pathological changes in the gland. Functional diagnosis considers the evaluation of physiological and metabolic state of patient caused by the thyroid hormone serum levels. We review contemporary diagnostic tests for disorders of thyroid morphology and function, and suggest some guidelines for their interpretation and limits.
