Summary: The basic concept of the
modern perinatology - the baby’s right to be born in physical, emotional
and spiritual health - starts with family planning. Unplanned, unwanted
birth can be prevented (contraception) or the pregnancy can be interrupted
(abortion). Abortion is a discontinuance of pregnancy before the foetus is
mature enough to be able to live outside the uterus. Artificial abortion
is induced expulsion of the foetus done on purpose. In order to apply
modern contraceptive methods with women in their generative age, a
retrospective study has been carried out on the material including all
cases of artificial abortion, miscarriage, childbirths and physical
examinations performed on women in the period 1990-2003 at the Gynaecology
and Obstetrics Ward, the Women’s Care Centre and the Public Health
Institute »Timok« in Zaječar. According to the results, the number of
abortions done on purpose stands in correlation of 184 to 69 in 100
deliveries. These highly negative results show that artificial abortion is
the basic method of contraception. This can also be proved by the average
number of consultations (0.56 – 3.42) at the Women’s Care Centre for
choosing an appropriate modern contraceptive measure. It should be
emphasized that these facts are not relevant, because it is usually very
hard to get the true number of artificial abortions owing to the fact that
there are difficulties in registering, there is a number of gynaecologists
with private practice and the abortion itself is differently classified.
The solution to the problem of reproductive health depends entirely on the
possibilities and readiness of the society to face the problem of
artificial abortion as a basic method of contraception. Key words: abortion Note:
