Summary: Many people do wrongly believe that, being natural, all herbs and foods are safe for consumption. Very often, herbs and food may interact with drugs you take as your regular therapy, which can result in serious undesirable reactions. Some dietary products increase the risk of side effects. Theophylline, a drug that is used to treat asthma, contains xanthines, which is also found in tea, coffee, chocolate, and other sources of caffeine. Consumption of large quantities of these substances, while taking theophylline, increases the risk of drug toxicity. We describe a 17-year-old boy with pre-existing asthma, who developed ventricular fibrillation after consuming Guarana ‘energy drink’ with a high caffeine level. This case highlights the need for adequate labelling and regulation of such products.
Key words: energy drink, guarana, caffeine, theophylline, interaction, drug toxicity
