Summary: Arias jaundice (jaundice Arias) occurs in 1-2% of healthy breastfed infants and newborns. It occurs as a result of the immaturity of the liver and the inhibitory effect of breast milk on the clearance of unconjugated bilirubin. The changing levels and length of unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in infants with Arias jaundice were analyzed in the paper. Three male infants from the same family were tested. All infants were born on time, naturally, without complications; they were on natural food and optimally progressing. In none of the respondents hemolysis or other illness followed by unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia was diagnosed. All three children suffered from developing jaundice in the first week after birth, with the value of unconjugated bilirubin in the range of 167-238 μmol/l. The serum bilirubin level normalized between the ninth and thirteenth week of the infants’ life with unconjugated bilirubin value of 5.82-43.22 μmol/l. In none of the children toxic effects of hyperbilirubinemia were observed. Arias jaundice is a harmless and transitory disorder of bilirubin metabolism. It occurs in healthy newborns and breastfed infants. Jaundice is pronounced in the early neonatal period, but gradually disappears between the seventh and thirteenth week. Key words: unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia, breastfeeding; immaturity of the liver Napomena:
