      Summary:
Cervical cytology and Papanicolaou stain (PAP test) have been accepted as methods in cervical cancer screening worldwide. The objective of this paper is to show the frequency of cervical cancer, age structure and treatment methods applied at Zaječar Gynaecology Department in the period 1996-2011 as well as the contribution of cervical cancer screenings in the early diagnosing of this malignant disease. The method used is retrospective research and medical documentation analysis in the period 1996-2011 at Zaječar Gynaecology Department. The data were processed statistically and presented in tables and graphs. There were 51,953 cervical cancer screenings with PAP tests done from 1996 to 2011. At the same time, 493 women were treated of cervical cancer by operation, operation-irradiation and irradiation. There were 319 women (64.71%) who were treated of pre-invasive and micro-invasive cervical cancer, 281 (88.09%) of whom were diagnosed thanks to the screening. Of these 319 women, 199 (40.37%) were operated by conisation as they were younger, while 120 (24.34%) underwent hysterectomy as they were older. Invasive cervical cancer was treated with 95 women (19.27%) who were operated and irradiated after the operation. Only irradiation was applied in 79 women (16.02%) who could not be operated on, and 39 of them (49.37%) were over 61 and had not undergone cervical cancer screening in the last five years. I can conclude that cervical cancer screenings are very important in discovering this cancer in its early stages. As far as Zaječar is concerned, this is even much more important as it has always had a high incidence of this malignant disease.
Key words: cervical cancer, screening, Papanicolaou stain
