Summary: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic inflammation of the airways and lung parenchyma, which leads to narrowing of the airways. Bronchial constriction is usually progressive and not fully reversible on treatment. COPD can no longer be considered a disease only of the lungs but also of other organ systems. Diagnosis and severity of COPD is often masked by the simultaneous presence of other diseases. Since smoking remains the major risk factor for the development of COPD, the study of the effects of smoking represents the best model for unravelling the underlying mechanisms of COPD. This paper presents the basic pathophysiological mechanisms of the consequences of systemic inflammation in COPD. Understanding the mechanism of inflammation opens the possibility for greater therapeutic potential that should lead to more effective treatment of patients with COPD Key words: COPD, comorbidity, inflammation Napomena:
