      Summary:
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women and the second most common malignancy caused death in women throughout the world. Ultrasound is not harmful, it is painless and efficient and it differentiates benign from malignant changes with the probability higher than 90%, so it is successfully used both in screening for breast cancer and in regular gynaecological examinations. AIM of the study is to show reliability and applicability of this method, as well as the necessity to use it more widely in routine gynaecological practice. Material and methods: Ultrasound was performed in 694 women of general population, who turned up for breast examination at the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Clinical Centre of Vojvodina. Results: 694 women were examined. In 459 women the result was without any pathological findings (66.14%), in 148 women (21.33%) a benign dysplasia was found, in 22 (3.17%) a cyst measuring less than 2cm was found, in 39 (5.63%) a fibroadenoma was spotted, in 1 women stromal fibrosis was found, in 1 adenosis, in 3 (0.43%) lipoma, 5 had breast abscessus (0.72%), and 5 women had breast carcinoma (0.72%). Conclusion: Ultrasound examination of breasts cannot exclude mammography, but the two methods are complementary and it is necessary to ensure at the national level that adequate education in the field of ultrasound should train gynaecologists to perform it, with the aim of having a comprehensive screening of breast cancer.
Key words: ultrasound of breast, breast cancer, mammography, screening of breast carcinoma
