Summary: Introduction: Under the term ‘health technologies’ in Serbia, in the sense of the Law of Health Protection, we consider all health methods and procedures which can benefit to health promotion, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and trauma and rehabilitation, including safe, good-quality and efficient medicaments and medical devices, medical procedures and conditions for health services distribution. Subject: Except for the area of pharmaceutical assessment and health policy making, all other health care activities related to health technologies valuation (HTV) are in the hands of Commission for Health Technologies Valuation established by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia. Aiming to build capacity for using HTV as a scientifically based method for promotion of health care quality, good-practice clinical guidelines and health policy, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia has made HTV one of the components of the project «Health Care Development in Serbia». The results of this project component should make possible for decision-makers to recognize the place and role of HTV in the health care system and make possibilities for institutionalization on various levels, but also to ensure the increasing of knowledge and skills in the sense of creating an expert team capable for the realization of the entire valuation process, which was achieved through project implementation. Conclusions and recommendations: Results of the project recommend making the difference between valuation and assessment, as well as between deciding and decision- making , indirectly suggesting that HTV process, which is being «lege artis» implemented, has to have a legally formalized structure as well. The role of certain state authorities and institutions in the sense of regulation and demands for new technologies to be introduced in the health care market has to be clearly defined. A few independent institutions dealing with HTV would encourage healthy competition for the well-being of the society. Key words: health technologies, health technologies valuation
