Summary: Infection is one of the leading causes of preterm delivery. Morbidity and mortality of newborns is in most cases caused by infection during pregnancy. The aim of this study was to investigate the importance of defining CRP maternal blood levels in pregnant women with symptoms of preterm delivery, as a non-invasive marker of subclinical and clinical infection. Material and methods: We assumed that CRP maternal blood values signify the presence of local or systemic infection in pregnancy. In a prospective case-control study that included 45 pregnant women with the symptoms of preterm delivery, the latex reagent was used for detection of CRP levels in maternal blood (RapiTexRCRP), and cervical swabs were collected for the detection of local cervical infection. Results and conclusion: The results of this study have shown that positive CRP levels were found in all pregnant women with cervical infection. Significant decrease in CRP levels was found after adequate antibiotic therapy simul¬taneously with the treatment of local cervical or systemic infection.
