      Summary:
Dog bites have been recognized as an important public health problem in all researches in Europe, USA and Australia. All around the world it is more important to correctly estimate and monitor the incidence of dog bites and related costs and also to recognize the related risk factors. The present study aims to point at the problem of dog bites in the Municipality of Zaječar and to point to some of the factors that increase the risk of dog bites. Material and methods: It is a retrospective data analysis from the RZZO data base and the data base of the statistic section in the Primary Health Care Centre Zaječar. Dog bites incidence and specific rates by ages were calculated on the basis of the data from Population and Housing Census in Serbia 2002. Results: The number of reported dog bites in 2008 is 197 and the incidence is 284.3/100 000, with no significant differences in sex. The highest specific rate is in children under 20 years of age (472.5/100 000 children). The highest number of dog bites is reported in October and April. Discussion and conclusions: Some of risk factors for dog bites were estimated: the territory of the Municipality of Zaječar has a high risk for dog bites; the ages – high risk in children under 20, especially between 5-9 years of age; season – in spring and autumn months there is a higher risk for dog bites. For reducing the incidence of dog bites, it is necessary to control the number of stray dogs and to educate people, especially children, how to behave with dogs and how to react properly in risk situations.
Key words: dog bites, risk factors
