Summary: Introduction: the clinical syndromes of a spinal cord injury are: Central cord syndrome (Sy Schneider), Brow-Sequard Syndrom, anterior cord syndrome, posterior cord syndrome , syndrome caudae equinae and conus medullaris syndrome. Aim: to investigate demographic characteristics and functional outcomes in patients with clinical syndromes of spinal cord injury. Method: this study is a retrospective analysis of patients with clinical syndromes of spinal cord injury admitted to the “Clinic for Rehabilitation Dr M. Zotović”, Belgrade, Serbia, from January 2000 to December 2009. The classification of clinical syndromes is determined by clinical examination. The functional status was measured by the FIM scale (Functional Independence Measure). The international standards of the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) were used to record motor and sensory levels of the injury. To test statistical hypothesis a single factor ANOVA with Tukey posthoc test was used. Statistical hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of statistical significance. Results: The study included 591 participants with spinal cord injury. Of the total number of respondents, 93 (15.73%) of them were with clinical syndromes of the spinal cord, namely: Sy Schneider had 18 (3.0%, 17 males and 1 female), Sy Brown Sequard 6 (1.6%, 6 male), Sy Caudae equinae 54 (9.1%, 36 male and 18 female) and Sy Conus medullaris 15 (2.5%, 8 male and 7 female) patients. The average value of FIM score at discharge for all patients included in this study was 113.7 ± 16.2. The length of stay for all patients in this study was 82.1 ± 65.2. Conclusion: knowing the demographic characteristics and functional outcomes at admission may influence better functional recovery and better quality of life for patients with clinical syndromes of spinal cord injury. Key words: spinal cord injury, functional outcomes, clinical syndromes of spinal cord injury, rehabilitation Napomena: kompletan tekst rada na srpskom jeziku Note: full text in Serbian |
