Introduction: Pterygium is a degenerative disease of the conjunctiva with the affection of the cornea of the eye. The aim was to determine the effects of intra and postoperative applications of the steroids in the treatment of primary and recurrent pterygium with the applications of subconjunctival intralesional injections. Methods: The study included of 62 patients (79 eyes) with primary pterygium and 57 patients (64 eyes) with recurrent pterygium. Applications of Triamcinolone acetonide (Kenolog-40) in pterygium surgery were performed in our Department of Ophthalmology, in the period 3rd May 2010 to 3rd May 2013. The medicine was administrated during and after the surgery, in two or three doses, like subconjunctival injection of steroid, with clinical monitoring and evaluation of clinical signs of regression of primary and recurrent pterygium, which was correlated with the control group. Results: In all our patients, there was a complete resolution of primary and recurrent pterygium. Recurrent pterygium appeared only in the eyes of the control group as a complete relapse whereby subconjunctival steroid therapy was not applied - not even on examinations after one, six or twelve months. Conclusion: For a complete resolution of the primary and relapse pterygium, the application of one to two intralesional, subconjunctival steroid injections is required.
Key words: primary pterygium, recurrent pterygium, surgical treatment, Triamcinolone- acetonide
